Lighter Side of Christmas Parade
Welcome to the 2017 Lighter Side of Christmas Parade (LSOC)! The 29th annual parade will be held this year on Saturday, December 2nd at 6 pm in downtown Woodland Park.
The parade theme this year celebrates the 100th year anniversary of the founding of Lions Club International and the 50th Anniversary of the Disney movie “The Jungle Book” with the theme “Jingle in the Jungle.”
In 1925, Helen Keller asked the Lions to become the “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” In 1917, Lions Club International was founded by Melvin Jones and is now the world’s largest service organization. There are currently more than 46,000 clubs worldwide, 1.4 million members in 200 countries and geographic areas
The Lions Club Mission Statement is “To empower our volunteers to serve their community, meeting local humanitarian needs, encouraging community service and involvement.”
The Woodland Park Pikes Peak Lions Club supports and partners with the Colorado Lions Camp. A large portion of funds raised from the parade will go to the Colorado Lions Camp, a local camp for special needs persons from age 8 to 82 from across Colorado. All funds raised in the community stay in the community
The Lions Club also provides eyeglasses and eye checks for individuals who can’t afford them. Plans are underway for a used glasses drop off at the parade this year.
The “Fill the Vehicle” campaign is going to take place again this year, with parade attendees being asked to bring nonperishable food items to fill the Community Cupboard van following the parade during tree lighting and awards ceremony at the Ute Pass Cultural Center.
The Holiday Crazy Hat Contest, sponsored by Williams Furniture, is taking place the night of the parade. Get your crazy on and wear a crazy hat to the parade and tree lighting ceremony this year.
The committee is again organizing the annual city wide “Holiday Treasure Hunt” that will kick off in November with the first clue. The individual that finds the LSOC treasure symbol, based on weekly clues provided each Friday at sponsor businesses, will win a gift basket full of goodies from local businesses, valued in the past at over $1000.
The WP Library district is hosting the annual Gingerbread Contest, sure to be a tasteful event. Entries are to be dropped off at the library on Friday afternoon for judging. Entries will be on exhibit at the WP Library throughout the holiday season.
Details for all events and activities are available on this web site, where you can also explore sponsorship and participation opportunities for the 2017 Lighter Side of Christmas Activities and Parade.
The LSOC Committee was thrilled to present a check with funds totaling over $12,000 to the The Friends of the Florissant Fossil Beds, the 2016 parade beneficiary. We hope sponsors and parade participants will join us once again for the 2017 LSOC parade and events!
